A long, slim room needs carefully placed depth.

Keep the passage

Run painter's tape along the planned sofa edge and walk past it with a table in place. A sofa with slim arms may preserve interior width while keeping the exterior compact. Avoid an oversized chaise that blocks the only route to the window or adjacent room.

Use length wisely

A straight sofa against one long wall can keep circulation simple. Two short seats opposite each other may create conversation but can narrow the center. Check where doors swing, radiators sit, and outlets will be reached. A dark low sofa may visually recede, but it still occupies the same inches.

Choose a footprint that lets two people pass and sit without turning the room into a corridor.
