Two people's comfort preferences rarely match perfectly.

Talk about the ordinary evening

Does one person read upright while the other lounges? A moderate seat with movable cushions or ottoman may support both better than a single extreme. Measure the shared interior width and think about where arms, pillows, and drinks land. Try sitting together if possible.

Plan for change

A modular sofa can adapt to a later room, but check connectors and the dimensions of each piece. Avoid buying a huge sofa for a hypothetical future house if it crowds today's apartment. Agree on budget, fabric care, and how a return would work before placing the order.

Choose a compromise you both enjoy daily rather than an aspirational layout that only exists in a photograph.
