Live with the material
Fabric offers many textures and can feel softer immediately, but cleaning methods differ by fiber and finish. Leather can wipe clean for some spills yet needs its own care and may show scratches or temperature changes. Neither material is automatically pet-proof or child-proof. Ask for the exact upholstery type and care instructions.
Inspect the details
For fabric, look at weave, removable-cover instructions, and how stains should be treated. For leather, distinguish full-grain, top-grain, bonded, and faux materials rather than accepting a generic listing title. Consider the way sunlight reaches the sofa and how the material ages. Test a sample in your room if available.
Choose the surface you will care for willingly, not the one advertised as maintenance-free.
