Three layout checks before you commit to a footprint.

Identify the traffic path

Draw a line from the entrance to kitchen, bathroom, and windows. Put the sofa outside the busiest path rather than creating a detour around its arm. Tape the furniture on the floor and walk it while carrying laundry or groceries; those ordinary tasks reveal pinch points a floor plan hides.

Adjust the supporting pieces

A narrow table, nesting tables, or an ottoman can free the space in front of a deep sofa. Pull the seat slightly from the wall if that improves access to an outlet or curtain. Avoid putting a chaise on the side of the room that everyone must cross. Measure open doors and reclining furniture in use.

The successful layout keeps movement easy even when someone is already sitting down.
