Balance comfortable seating with clear movement.
Keep the walking line open
Stand at the entrance and trace the path to the next room. Place a sofa so that people can pass without turning sideways around the coffee table. Tape width and depth on the floor, then add the table and any ottoman. A slim-arm model can preserve interior seat width without expanding its exterior footprint.
Use visual weight carefully
A dark solid base feels different from an elevated frame, even at the same dimensions. A rounded all-foam sofa can look welcoming, but a deep seat may occupy more floor than expected. If the sofa is under a window, verify back height and clearance from heat sources. Make sure the seated view still feels right.
A little negative space around the sofa is not wasted space; it makes the room easier to live in.
