Plan for claws, fur, and favorite sleeping spots.
Choose a realistic barrier
A washable throw or fitted protector on the pet's regular place is often easier to clean than the whole sofa. Keep it secure so it does not bunch and create a slipping surface. For cats that scratch, offer an appealing scratching post nearby rather than relying on fabric marketing claims.
Clean gently and regularly
Vacuum fur with an upholstery-safe tool, check seams for trapped debris, and respond to accidents according to the care code. Trim claws or nails as appropriate for the animal and seek veterinary guidance for persistent accidents. Avoid harsh cleaners that can discolor fabric or leave a residue the pet contacts.
The goal is a sofa the household can share, with protection that is easy enough to use every week.
