Find the source before covering the smell.

Start with air and inspection

Open windows when possible, remove loose cushions, and check for a spill, pet accident, or trapped moisture. Vacuum surfaces and crevices using the upholstery attachment. A new sofa can have a packaging scent that eases with ventilation, but a persistent chemical or musty smell deserves a question to the seller.

Use only compatible care

Do not soak foam or spray fragrance into an unknown fabric. Follow the upholstery code and dry any approved cleaning thoroughly. If an odor came from a specific accident, treat that area promptly and consider professional help. For a new product, document the smell and contact the seller within the return window if it does not improve.

A clean sofa should not need a heavy scent to disguise an unresolved source.
