Start with furniture placement
Tape the sofa and table on the floor before choosing the rug. A rug should visually connect the seating rather than float as a tiny island in front of it. Check door swings and whether the rug edge becomes a trip point in the main path.
Choose proportion, not a formula
A larger rug can make a small room feel coherent, while an overly small one can fragment it. But there is no magic dimension that fits every floor plan. Leave visible floor at the perimeter where it helps the room breathe. Consider cleanability, especially under a pale sofa or in a pet home.
The rug should organize the seating and support movement, not dictate an impractical sofa size.
