The front edge influences how easy a seat is to use.
Why it matters
People often perch at the front to put on shoes or stand up. If the edge collapses, they may feel as though they are sliding off. Edge support can come from cushion construction, a frame, or denser foam; a rounded boneless shape may behave differently. It is not visible in a styled photograph.
How to check
In person, sit near the edge and stand. Online, look for construction details, seat height, and candid seated photos. Ask whether the front edge is reinforced and whether the support changes near the arms. Do not assume a soft surface means no support or a firm surface means a strong edge.
Pay attention to the part of the sofa used at every arrival and departure.
