Depth shapes posture and the room footprint.
Measure the usable seat
Overall depth includes the back; seat depth is the space from the front edge to the back support. A deeper seat lets some people curl up but can leave others unable to sit upright with feet down. Compare the number with a sofa you already know, and account for loose back cushions that reduce usable depth.
Map it in the room
A few extra inches can narrow the path to a doorway or table. Tape both the sofa outline and a table footprint on the floor. If you like a deep lounge but need occasional upright seating, a supportive back pillow may help; it will not change the overall room footprint. Look at seat height as well.
A comfortable depth belongs to both your body and the floor plan.
