Choose how you want to sit, not a marketing adjective.

Translate the label

Soft may describe a pillowy top layer over support or a seat that lets you sink deeply. Firm may still have a comfortable surface. Read the construction and consider your preferred posture: feet on the floor for conversation, legs up for films, or long stretches of laptop work. Seat depth often changes the feel as much as foam firmness.

Test by comparison

Measure the seat height and depth of a chair you enjoy. If trying furniture in person, sit for more than a moment and stand back up without using the arms. Online, look for detailed return terms and photos of people actually seated. A very deep seat may need a lumbar pillow for a shorter person.

There is no universal comfort score; aim for a seat that supports your most common use.
